Wilhelm August Ludolf von Voss (born September 17, 1819 in Stendal , † November 5, 1893 in Halle an der Saale ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade.

Life

origin

His parents were Franz Friedrich von Voss (1777–1867) and his wife, Freiin Wilhelmine von Gayl (1781–1870), a daughter of General Ludwig Dietrich Eugen von Gayl (1785–1853). His father was a captain in Infantry Regiment No. 27 and later Mayor of Stendal. His brother Franz Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Conrad (born November 26, 1816, † March 14, 1907) became mayor of Halle .

Career

He received his education at the grammar school in Stendal. After graduating, he joined the 26th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1836 . There he was promoted to Portepeefähnrich on September 18, 1837 and to Seconde-Lieutenant on March 14, 1839. From October 1, 1842 to July 31, 1845 he was posted to the General War School . During the Baden Revolution of 1849 he fought in battle near Graben.
He was transferred to the 26th Landwehr Regiment on February 1, 1850, where he was appointed company commander of the 2nd Battalion in Burg. There he was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on June 22, 1852 and transferred back to the 26th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1853. As early as October 1, 1853, he was appointed teacher at the combined division school of the 7th and 8th division schools. Promoted to captain on October 18, 1855, he was appointed director of the school on September 11, 1856. He returned to the 26th Infantry Regiment as a company commander on August 1, 1858. On December 11, 1863, he was transferred as a major to the 59th Infantry Regiment and there adjutant at the General Command in the 1st Army Corps. On December 6, 1864, he joined the 54th Infantry Regiment as a battalion commander.
During the German War of 1866 he fought near Gitschin and Königgrätz . For this he received the Crown Order 3rd Class with Swords on September 20, 1866 , and on October 30, 1866 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
On July 14, 1870, he came as a commander in the 14th Infantry Regiment, where he was promoted to colonel on July 26, 1870. During the Franco-Prussian War he was seriously wounded in the Battle of Gravelotte and was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class for this.

On August 15, 1871, he was transferred to the Kolberg Fortress as a commander , from where he came on June 11, 1872 as a commander in the 85th Infantry Regiment . On May 28, 1874, he was then commissioned with the command of the 4th Infantry Brigade and placed à la suite of the 85th Infantry Regiment. On July 14, 1874, he was confirmed as commander. On September 19, 1874 he was promoted to major general and on January 18, 1877 the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd class with oak leaves and on September 9, 1879 the Order of the Crown 2nd class with swords . On February 3, 1880, he was given the character of lieutenant general and then put up for disposal with a pension . He died on November 5, 1893 in Halle an der Saale.

Voss married on October 20, 1848 in Magdeburg Wilhelmine Auguste Karoline Luise Sophie von Carnap-Quernheimb (* April 8, 1824, † July 25, 1866), a daughter of General Karl Arnold Dietrich von Carnap-Quernheimb . After the death of his first wife on November 29, 1868 in Colberg, he married Ottonie Charlotte Asta Emmeline Leonie von Wedel (* October 24, 1837), a daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Otto Friedrich Ludwig von Wedel on Althof (* April 14, 1797; † 25 November 1870).
