Will - Follow your dream (Original title: Will ) is a British drama directed by Ellen Perry from 2011. The main roles are played by Perry Eggleton , Kristian Kiehling and Damian Lewis . It tells the story of the orphan Will, who sets off from England alone to Istanbul to see the Champions League final between Liverpool FC and AC Milan .

action

The eleven-year-old half-orphan Will Brennan lives in a British boarding school, he is a big football fan and loyal to his club Liverpool FC. Will's life changes when his father Gareth, who has not looked after Will for a few years, gives him tickets for the Champions League final between Liverpool FC and AC Milan. However, Gareth dies before father and son can travel to Istanbul together. Will runs away from the boarding school and makes his own way to the final.

In Paris, Will meets the reticent Alek, a former Yugoslav football professional, on the Großmark. Alek takes the boy in, who is now completely destitute as a victim of a street robbery. Touched by the story and determination of Will, Aleks’s next-door neighbor and friend provides the two of them with money and a car so that the boy can continue his journey with Aleks’s company.

So Alek and Will set off. During a stopover in Yugoslavia, Aleks’s traumatic experiences after the civil war, which led to the end of his football career, become obvious and a friendship based on mutual understanding develops between Will and Alek.

The two are now wanted by the police, but with a lot of luck they will eventually get to Istanbul. Here the dream of the final seems to have burst at the last minute, but fans and football professionals of Liverpool FC, who have become aware of Will's story through a global media campaign, come to the rescue.

background

The film was produced by Strangelove Films in collaboration with Galatafilm. The 42-day filming took place in England, France and Turkey. The cost of production was $ 12 million.

The cinema premiere took place on October 16, 2011 in Liverpool. The film did not reach cinemas in German-speaking countries. The DVD with German synchronization went on sale on January 10, 2013 and is distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

criticism

The magazine film-dienst concluded that the film was an "original mixture of youth film and family drama". The "good actors and the impressive staging" were highlighted, which compensated for the sometimes "too thick sentiment" of the plot. Cinema wrote, Will - Follow your dream is a film that "moves".

Variety criticized Ellen Perry's film debut, however, as another missed opportunity to make a successful film about football and saw the reason in the "unconvincing message, the poor script, the unequal acting performance and the slow pace". Perry, "producer-director-scriptwriter", shows that she is "clearly overwhelmed" by a material that would have been a challenge even for "greater talents". The "film technique" was praised with the restriction that the film editing suffered from the "numerous, one measure too long takes". The film magazine Empire attested that Will was a “well-intentioned” story, but “botched story” by the script and direction, but that it certainly had “feel-good moments”.
