life and career

March was born Jane March Horwood in 1973 in Edgware , London . Her father, the teacher Bernard Horwood, has English and Spanish ancestry, her mother Jean is Chinese - Vietnamese . March grew up with a three year older brother in Pinner, London.

At the age of 15 March was discovered as a model and signed by the modeling agency Storm Model Management . Since she was not suitable for the catwalk due to her height of only 1.57 m, she began to work as a photo model and from then on used her middle name March as her last name instead of Horwood . In the course of her modeling career, she worked for a number of well-known fashion houses such as Armani , Chanel and Versace as well as with well-known photographers such as Annie Leibovitz and Helmut Newton .

In September 1990 March appeared on the cover of the youth magazine Just Seventeen and the director Jean-Jacques Annaud , who was looking for a suitable leading actress for the film adaptation of the novel The Lover by Marguerite Duras , discovered her picture and invited her to the casting . He was enthusiastic about the then 17-year-old March: “Most girls of this age do not have this ambiguity . You have good teeth and a nice smile. [March on the other hand] had a past in her eyes. ”Although March had no acting experience, she got the role. The Lover (1992) was a great success and March received the Bambi for best leading actress for her acting performance .

However, the young actress also felt the downside of fame. Due to the very real-looking sex scenes in the film, the British press soon speculated that March and her film partner Tony Leung Ka-Fai had actually practiced the sexual act in front of the camera, and the actress was nicknamed "The Sinner from Pinner" (in English: "The sinner of Pinner"). March and her family made this reporting so difficult that they went into hiding temporarily to get away from the headlines. With the statement "Whether it is simulated or real, it doesn't matter to me", director Annaud initially did not put a stop to the speculations, only later did he reject all assumptions as untrue. March later said, “The suggestion [Annauds] that I actually slept with Tony Leung while we were filming was a disgusting claim. [Annaud] tried to advertise his film with it. Nowadays I would handle this thing differently, but back when I was almost a kid it was very, very difficult for me. I felt taken advantage of by him. [...] After that, Jean-Jacques Annaud and I had no contact for several years. "

Two years after her debut, March starred opposite Bruce Willis in the psychological thriller Color of Night (1994). Her performance was largely received negatively by critics and she was nominated twice for the Golden Raspberry . This was followed by roles in lesser-known films and guest appearances in television series. In 2010 she played a supporting role in the fantasy film Clash of the Titans and in 2011 she was seen in the British drama Will - Follow your dream , but she was unable to build on her success with The Lover until today (as of 2014).

From 1993 to 2001 March was married to Carmine Zozzora, a friend of Bruce Willis and co-producer of Color of Night .
