Will Schaber (born May 1, 1905 in Heilbronn , † July 5, 1996 in New York ) was a German-speaking journalist and publicist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1923, Will Schaber completed a traineeship under Erich Schairer at the Sonntags-Zeitung in Heilbronn. From 1924 to 1928 he worked as a reporter and features editor for the social democratic Neckar-Echo , in 1929 for the social democratic press service and from 1930 to 1931 for the Volksblatt in Saalfeld .

Schaber left the SPD in 1931, joined the Socialist Workers 'Party and worked as a news editor for the Socialist Workers' newspaper . In March 1933 he was arrested in Munich and held in protective custody in the Corneliusstrasse police prison until the end of April . In May of the same year Schaber emigrated to Estonia with his wife Else Rüthel . After he was refused entry to Austria, Schaber settled in Brno .

From 1934 to 1938 he was co-editor (together with Rolf Reventlow and Richard Teclaw) of the Korrespondenz Press Service , was also an employee of the Brno daily messenger and Monday morning and occasionally wrote articles for lunch , the Prager Tagblatt and the Brno magazine Mesic (Ger. : The month ). In September 1938, during the Sudeten crisis , he managed to get to the USA via Rotterdam with a visitor visa, and he obtained US citizenship in 1949.

From 1941 to 1962 Will Schaber worked as a department head of British Information Services in New York, from 1962 to 1965 as the New York representative of the television organization Peter von Zahns and from 1967 to 1972 as editor of the emigrant magazine Aufbau .

Will Schaber was President of the PEN Center for German-Language Authors Abroad from 1967 to 1972 and an honorary member of the Oskar-Maria-Graf-Gesellschaft until his death in 1996. He is also the namesake of a prize awarded by the ex-association of the Institute for Journalism of the Technical University of Dortmund is awarded for the best practical theses.
