Willekin Pape

Willekin (Wilke) Pape (* in Lübeck ; † March 2, 1348 in Avignon ) was Schwerin canon from 1332 , elected bishop of Schwerin from 1347 and a son of Lübeck's mayor Arnold Pape.

Life

After the death of Bishop Henry I von Bulow chose in 1347 the Schwerin Cathedral Chapter from among its canon will Pape child as his successor. The election day and other details are unknown. The Electus was a son of the mayor of Lübeck Arnold Pape. His brother Hinrich was also a councilor and mayor there.

On October 22, 1325, Pope John XXII. Willekin Pape, who came from Lübeck, was given a canon at the cathedral in Hamburg , reserved his benefice for him and gave him the job of installing him in this office. As early as May 3, 1326, by papal appointment, without prejudice to this fact, he was also Canonicus with the prospect of a praebende in the Schwerin cathedral chapter. On October 4, 1329, the Pope reserved him a higher dignity in the Schwerin cathedral chapter, although he already held canon positions here and in Hamburg with entitlement to benefices. On June 29, 1332, as the Schwerin canon, he was entrusted with the execution of a papal commission. In 1345 Willekin Pape was promoted to the dignity of a cantor in the Hamburg cathedral chapter and on March 19, 1346 he became the owner of the Schwerin prebende in Gagezow.

In the field of justice, Canon Pape seemed to have acquired special knowledge. He was active for the chapters to which he belonged. As procurator in the struggle of the archbishop of Bremen, his suffragans and cathedral chapters, also in Hamburg, against the attacks of the mendicant monks. He was active in the disputes between the cathedral chapter and the city of Hamburg in 1333 and in 1334 in the process of the occupation of the Stralsund parish . The relationship of trust with Canon Pape in the Schwerin diocese was one of the reasons for electing him to succeed Bishop Heinrich von Bülow, who died in 1347. To obtain the confirmation, Electus Pape went personally to Avignon to the papal curia, but could not oppose the Pope Clement VI. provided by Andreas von Posen.

Willekin Pape died on March 2, 1348 at the papal court in Avignon without having obtained the desired papal confirmation as bishop of Schwerin. The canons and benefices he had held were reassigned on April 29, 1348 , with reference to his recent death at the papal court .
