Willem Kersters

Willem Kersters (born February 9, 1929 in Antwerp ; † December 29, 1998 ibid) was a Belgian composer , professor and musician.

Life

Willem Kersters graduated from the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp in 1945 in the subjects of harmony and piano . He then completed his skills through further studies at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Jean Louël ( counterpoint ), Jean Absil and Marcel Quinet ( fugue ), Marcel Poot ( composition ) and René Defossez ( orchestral direction ). After graduating as a music teacher, he worked for several years in the cities of Tienen , Löwen and Aarschot . From 1961 to 1968 he held the position of music program director at Belgian Radio and Television (BRT) .

From 1962 he was a member of the teaching staff of the Royal Flemish Conservatory in Antwerp as a lecturer in harmony, later also in composition. In 1967 the Conservatory in Maastricht , Netherlands appointed him professor for music theory subjects. He ended these teaching activities in 1989. One of the students included a. Jan De Maeyer and Wim Henderickx .

Kersters has received national and international prizes and awards for his compositions. In 1990 he became a member of the Koninklijke Academie voor Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten van België .

style

In the early works of the 1950s there are influences from late Romanticism and Expressionism . Then Kersters developed his own composition technique based on tritone relationships. From 1960 he also dealt with twelve-tone technology and serialism , later he returned to tonal elements. From the mid-1970s he turned increasingly to vocal and choral music. His work comprises a total of over 120 compositions, including stage works (ballet, opera), orchestral works (including symphonies), chamber, organ, vocal and choral music.
