Willem Albert Gerard Van de Voorde (born July 21, 1964 ) is a Belgian diplomat .

Life

He studied philosophy at the University Faculties St Aloysius , where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1984. From 1987 to 1988 he studied law at the Catholic University of Leuven and at the London School of Economics . He graduated with a Master of Laws . 1990 earned a Masters in Political Science from the Free University of Brussels .

In 1989 Van de Voorde joined the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1991 he became an attaché in the Belgian representation to the European Union in Brussels . This was followed from 1994 to 2000 as a secretary to Queen Paola of Belgium . Afterwards he was first from 2000 to 2004 envoy at the Belgian Embassy Germany in Berlin , then from 2004 to 2008 in Japan in Tokyo . In 2007 he studied Management of Change at the GLOBIS Management School in Tokyo .

He then returned to the Foreign Office and worked with responsibility for European affairs as Deputy Head of the Cabinet of Vice Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Steven Vanackere from 2008 to 2011 and then from 2011 to 2014 Didier Reynders .

In 2014 he became the Belgian ambassador to Austria in Vienna . At the same time, he was also accredited for Bosnia-Herzegovina and from 2015 also for Slovenia and Slovakia . He was also the permanent representative of Belgium to UN organizations in Vienna. In September 2018 he moved to Germany as an ambassador in Berlin , where he was accredited on September 20, 2018. Since January 2020 he has been the permanent representative of Belgium to the European Union in Brussels.

In addition to Dutch, he also speaks German , English , French and, with a basic knowledge of Japanese .
