Willi Ertz (born May 28, 1943 in Neunkirchen ; † July 5, 2018 ) was a German football goalkeeper and coach . He played all of his games for Borussia Neunkirchen .

Career

Willi Ertz began his career as a teenager at Borussia Neunkirchen . In 1963, at the age of 20, he was number 2 behind Horst Kirsch in the regional league team. In the second half of the season he was allowed to guard the gate for the first time, because Kirsch's form curve was pointing downwards. In the promotion round to the Bundesliga , for which Borussia had qualified due to the championship title in the Regionalliga , both keepers were almost equal. The choice fell on Ertz, who is said to have seemed very nervous in the 5-1 defeat against Tasmania Berlin , but with “great parades” against FC Bayern Munich, he secured it to zero, so that Borussia could win 2-0. With these two points, Borussia rose one point ahead of Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and Ertz was celebrated as a hero.

In the next season he was initially number 1. But on the first day of the game he made an own goal. He slipped and fisted a shot from Nuremberg's Heinrich Müller into his own goal. After the second game against Borussia Dortmund was lost 2-1, Ertz had to sit on the bench, but only one game. Now Ertz was back in goal, made another mistake in the 3-0 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern on matchday six and had to be content with the reserve role as a result. He was only allowed to prove his skills again on matchday 24, but only because Kirsch was injured. One day later he had to give way to the recovering Kirsch. But not for a long time, because Kirsch made a few blunders in the following games and so Ertz was back on the 27th matchday. He justified this with good performances and was allowed to stand in goal until the end of the season.

So he went into the season as number 1 even after relegation, but the interplay between Ertz and Kirsch was far from over. The team made it to the 1st Bundesliga with alternating keepers. However, Ertz was unable to take part due to a broken hand. Despite this, Borussia managed to get promoted and Kirsch was allowed to keep the goal in the first games, but again only until the 8th matchday. After Kirsch conceded six goals against Borussia from Dortmund, Ertz was set up again. With him in goal, Neunkirchen had a score of 6: 2 points within four weeks. It should be noted that the 2-point rule still applied at that time . This series ended in a 0:10 debacle at Borussia Mönchengladbach . Despite the ten goals conceded, Ertz is said to have prevented a higher defeat. But in the next game he made a mistake when he hit the ball in a defensive attempt and was therefore partly responsible for the 1: 2 defeat. This phase of weakness continued and Ertz had to leave his place again. Kirsch played the last games of the season, which Borussia Neunkirchen ended up being relegated with 90 goals conceded.

This relegation was followed by another and Ertz toyed with the idea of switching to TSV 1860 Munich , but ultimately remained loyal to his Borussia. The lively exchange in the Borussen goal continued for one season until Kirsch switched to Röchling Völklingen . Now the 27-year-old Ertz was the undisputed number 1 and set a regional league record. He stayed clean for the first ten games, a total of 950 minutes. This record could even have been 995 minutes had it not been for an injury-related substitution against ASV Landau at half-time on matchday 6 . Thanks in part to his strong performances, Neunkirchen was champion of the Regionalliga in the 1971/72 season, but did not make it to the Bundesliga against Wuppertaler SV . This was also denied in the 1973/74 season, in which Ertz was appointed team captain. In the next season, the first of the 2nd Bundesliga , they surprisingly relegated.

Now Ertz fought for a long time with his Borussia to get promoted again, which only succeeded in 1980. So Ertz should play his last season again in the 2nd division. The now 38-year-old ended his career with another relegation. In total, he made 153 appearances in the Regionalliga Süd, 44 appearances in the Bundesliga, 20 appearances in the promotion rounds and 70 appearances in the 2nd Bundesliga for Borussia.

After his playing career, Ertz coached the West Palatinate SV Martinshöhe for three years , but then returned to his Borussia and from 1995 worked as co- and goalkeeping coach and also sat on the bench a few times as an interim coach. His greatest success as a coach was in 2000/01 when he was promoted to the regional league.

In 2010 the now 67-year-old ended his engagement at Neunkirchen and retired. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Bundesliga, Ertz was elected to a “Saarland anniversary team” in 2013. All Saarlanders who had played in the Bundesliga since 1963 were up for a vote, which was organized by Ellenfeld eV and the Saarpark Center .

Willi Ertz died on July 5, 2018 at the age of 75.
