Willi Schuh (musicologist)
Willi Schuh (born November 12, 1900 in Basel , † October 4, 1986 in Zurich ) was a Swiss musicologist .
Life
Willi Schuh was born on November 12, 1900 in Basel. First he studied music with Eugen Kutschera and Werner Wehrli in Aarau and with Eugen Papst in Bern . From 1920 he was a private student of Walter Courvoisier in Munich. At the same time he studied composition with Anton Beer-Walbrunn at the Academy of Music . From 1922 Schuh began studying musicology with Adolf Sandberger and art, literary and theater history with Heinrich Wölfflin , Fritz Strich and Artur Kutscher at Munich University . In 1924 he continued his studies in Bern with Ernst Kurth , among others . He received his doctorate in 1927 on the subject of problems of form under Heinrich Schütz .
From 1928, Schuh initially worked in Zurich as a music critic for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung . From 1944 to 1965 he was their music editor. Between 1930 and 1944 he taught music history at the Zurich Conservatory and between 1939 and 1944 harmony . Between 1934 and 1936 Schuh was co-editor of the communications of the Swiss Music Research Society , and from 1941 to 1968 he worked as editor of the Swiss music newspaper .
The central topic of Schuh's musicological research was the composer Richard Strauss . Schuh was in contact with the composer from 1936 until Strauss' death in 1949. Another focus of his work was the Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck .
Willi Schuh was a member of the Swiss Music Education Association from 1931 to 1939 and of the International Musicological Society from 1967 to 1972 .
He found his final resting place in the Manegg cemetery in Zurich .

- from 1971: Honorary member of the Swiss Music Research Society.
- 1963: Hans-Georg-Nägeli-Medal of the City of Zurich, for his services to Zurich's musical life.
