William Anthony Hughes

William Anthony Hughes (born September 23, 1921 in Youngstown , Ohio , † February 7, 2013 in Fort Thomas , Kentucky ) was Bishop of Covington .

Life

William Hughes was ordained priest on April 6, 1946 at St. Columban's Cathedral in Youngstown . He studied at St. Charles College in Baltimore and St. Mary Seminary in Cleveland. After various pastoral activities, he completed a degree in education at Notre Dame University in 1956 and became the first principal of Cardinal Mooney High School . He was appointed Doctor of Divinity (DD, honorary doctorate in theology). In 1961 he was appointed by Pope John XXIII. appointed monsignor . He became Superintendent of Diocese Schools and Vicar for Education in the Diocese of Youngstown in 1965.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 23, 1974 auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Youngstown and titular bishop of Inis Cathaig . The Bishop of Youngstown, James William Malone , consecrated him on September 12, 1974 in St. Columban's Cathedral in Youngstown; Co- consecrators were Joseph Bernardin , Archbishop of Cincinnati , and William Michael Cosgrove , Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland .

Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Covington on April 13, 1979; he was introduced to office on May 8, 1979. On July 4, 1995, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
