Richard Henry Ackerman

Richard Henry Ackerman CSSp (born August 30, 1903 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , USA , † November 18, 1992 in Covington , Kentucky , United States ) was a Roman Catholic religious bishop of Covington .

Life

Richard Ackerman was born to John Ackerman and his wife Josphine. After "Duquesne University High School", where he obtained his university entrance qualification , he moved to the "Duquesne University School of Drama" in 1920. In 1921 he entered the religious community of Spiritans and made his profession on August 15, 1922.

His church career began on August 28, 1926 with his ordination as a religious priest of the Spiritans, which was donated to him by Bishop Maurice F. McAuliffe , auxiliary bishop in Hartford . On April 6, 1956, he was appointed titular bishop of Lares and became auxiliary bishop in San Diego , California . His episcopal ordination took place on 22 May in 1956 by Bishop John Francis Dearden of Pittsburgh , co-consecrators were Bishop Jean Gay CSSp of Basse-Terre and Thomas John McDonnell , auxiliary bishop in New York .

Between 1926 and 1940 Ackerman was novice master of the Spiritans, vicar in the parish of St. Benedict the Moor in Pittsburg, assistant to the national director of the Pontifical Association of the Holy Childhood, assistant to the professor of philosophy at St. Mary's Seminary in Norwalk, and vicar at the St. Mary Parish in Detroit Michigan.

In 1941 he became the national director of the Pontifical Association of the Holy Childhood. In 1947 he became vice president of the Association's Superior Council. On the occasion of his silver jubilee as a priest, in 1951 Pope Pius XII. (1939-1958) awarded the Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice . He was a member and bearer of the Grand Cross of the Columbus Knights and belonged to the Coetus Internationalis Patrum .

On May 17, 1960, he became Bishop of Covington, Kentucky. He had exercised this bishopric until his retirement on November 28, 1978 and remained Bishop Emeritus of Covington until his death on November 18, 1992. He was a participant in the four sessions of the Second Vatican Council . During his tenure, he was a co-consecrator of William Graham Connare (1960), Alfredo Méndez-Gonzalez CSC (1960), Vincent Martin Leonard (1964) and James Kendrick Williams (1984). His final resting place is St. Mary's Cemetery in Fort Mitchell.
