successes

William Barnes took part in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris in a trap . In the team competition, he finished second with the Canadian team behind the United States and ahead of Finland. With a total of 360 points, the team, which in addition to Barnes also consisted of George Beattie , James Montgomery , Samuel Vance , John Black and Samuel Newton , was on par with the Finns, but defeated them in a final jump-off and thus won the silver medal. Barnes was the team's second weakest shooter with 85 points, so his score was not included in the overall standings.

His son Rolph Barnes was also a participant in the 1924 Olympic Games; he started in the 1500 meter run. Barnes himself inherited a quarry from his father, which he operated and expanded as managing director. After his death, his son Rolph continued the business.
