William Bate Hardy

William Bate Hardy FRS (born April 6, 1864 in Erdington near Birmingham , † January 23, 1934 in Cambridge ) was a British biologist . Hardy suggested the name " hormone " to Ernest Starling .

Life

William Bate Hardy was born in Erdington , a suburb of Birmingham , in 1864 to William Hardy from Llangollen, Welsh, and his wife Sarah Bate. He first studied at Framlingham College and graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1888 . Hardy married Alice Mary Finch in Cambridge in 1898. In 1902 he became a member of the Royal Society and in 1930 an honorary member ( Honorary Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . Hardy taught at the University of Cambridge and became a professor there. He died at the age of 69 in Cambridge and was buried at Caius College Chapel.

The Schulze-Hardy rule is named after him and Hans Schulze .
