William Broyles Junior
William Dodson Broyles Jr. (born October 8, 1944 in Houston , Texas ) is an American screenwriter . He is best known for the films Apollo 13 and Planet of the Apes .
Life
Broyles graduated from Rice University , graduating in 1966. He then studied philosophy , economics and politics at the University of Oxford . He joined the Peace Corps , but then joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968 . As a lieutenant, Broyles was involved in the Vietnam War and served in Vietnam for a year. Upon his return, he co-founded Texas Monthly magazine and served as its editor for eight years. He then switched to Newsweek . He later wrote columns for US News & World Report .
In 1984 he made a trip to Vietnam, on the basis of which he wrote the book Brothers in Arms: A Journey from War to Peace . In the late 1980s he was involved in the development of the television series China Beach , subsequently turning to screenwriting.
In 1996 he and Al Reinert were nominated for an Oscar in the Best Adapted Screenplay category for the Apollo 13 screenplay . He was nominated for the Satellite Award for the scripts for Jarhead - Willkommen im Dreck and Flags of Our Fathers .
Broyles is married for the third time. His second wife was the actress Linda Purl .
