William E. Leuchtenburg

William Edward Leuchtenburg (born September 28, 1922 in New York City ) is an American historian .

He graduated from Cornell University and received his PhD from Columbia University . There he taught after a brief period at Smith College , New York University and Harvard University for thirty years and held the DeWitt-Clinton Chair. Leuchtenburg was William Rand Kenan Jr. Professor at the University of North Carolina for ten years from 1982 until his retirement .

His subject areas are on the one hand the history of the American presidents, in particular he has published on Franklin Delano Roosevelt , and on the other hand the history of constitutional jurisdiction.

He is a member of the Organization of American Historians and the Society of American Historians (SHA). In 1964 the latter awarded him the Francis Parkman Prize for his book "Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal, 1932-1940" . With this he also won the Bancroft Prize from Columbia University. In 1977 he was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Leuchtenburg was the President of the SHA from 1978 to 1981. In term 1985/1986 he was President of the Organization of American Historians. In 1991 he became the president of the American Historical Association (AHA) for twelve months .

He was given the honor of selecting Roosevelt's quotations for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, DC.

In 2007 he received the North Carolina Award , North Carolina's highest honor for civilians, in the field of literature. In 2008 he received the newly awarded Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. Award for Distinguished Writing in American History of Enduring Public Significance from the SHA .

Leuchtenburg has been married to Jean Anne since 1984 and has three children. He lives in Chapel Hill .

In addition to his university teaching and research activities, Leuchtenburg was also an active participant in political events, for example he demonstrated together with Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma in 1965 . He also analyzed the outcome of presidential elections for NBC and commented on the inauguration of US presidents for various broadcasters . Leuchtenburg gave lectures in the Capitol , the Supreme Court and the French Senate . In 1977 Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 25-year reign. Leuchtenburg gave the opening speech.
