William Edward Story

William Edward Story (born April 29, 1850 in Boston , Massachusetts , † April 10 [different: April 11 ] 1930 in Worcester , Massachusetts) was an American mathematician . He made a contribution to the development of mathematics in the United States as an independent scientific discipline.

Live and act

Story graduated from Harvard University in 1871 . He then traveled to Germany to hear lectures from Karl Weierstrass , Ernst Eduard Kummer and Hermann von Helmholtz in Berlin. With Carl Gottfried Neumann and Wilhelm Scheibner he acquired a Dr. phil. with the work On the algebraic relations existing between the polars of the binary quintic .

1875/76 Story worked as a lecturer at Harvard University before he was appointed professor of mathematics at the newly opened Johns Hopkins University in 1876 , and in 1889 at the newly opened Clark University . Story retired in 1921 .

From 1878 to 1882, Story was the editor of the American Journal of Mathematics . Towards the end of his career, Story mainly dealt with the history of mathematics and the work of Omar Chayyām . Story's students included Linnaeus Dowling , Solomon Lefschetz, and Henry Taber .

In 1876 Story was elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1881 as a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science , and in 1908 as a member of the National Academy of Sciences .

Story was married to Mary Deborah Harrison from 1878, the couple had one child. William Edward Story died on April 10, 1930, a pneumonia . His grave is located at the Central Cemetery of Beverly , Massachusetts.
