William Katt (born February 16, 1951 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American film and television actor .

Life

William Katt was born as the son of actor Bill Williams (born as "Wilhelm Katt" of German origin) and actress Barbara Hale . He spent time on film sets during his childhood. He attended Orange Coast College before embarking on a career as a musician. He also devoted himself to acting and took on appearances in small television roles from the early 1970s.

His early film roles include the popular student Tommy Ross in Brian De Palma's 1976 cult film Carrie and the role of the Sundance Kid in the 1979 film Butch and Sundance: The Early Days , a prequel to the classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid . Katt also auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars (1977), which then went to Mark Hamill . Katt is well known in the surfing community for his role as Barlow in Decision Day (1978), which came out on May 26, 1978. In 2004 he received huge applause from enthusiastic surf professionals when he presented one of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) awards at the annual World Championship Tour (WCT).

In 1981, in the television series The Greatest American Hero , Katt got the role of Ralph Hinkley , a kind, shy teacher who gets a flying suit from aliens. He played this part until the end of the series in 1986. Although Katt always felt uncomfortable in his costume, this remained his most famous role to this day, at least in the USA.

In 1981 he played the title character in the musical Pippin . In 1986, Katt played the male lead in the horror comedy House - Das Horrorhaus . From 1985 Katt played the character of the detective Paul Drake Jr. in the television film series Perry Mason , a remake of the classic court series from the 1960s, in which he appeared alongside his mother Barbara Hale and Raymond Burr . He also played the leading role of a politician in the television series Top of the Hill in 1989 and a role in the television show Good Sports in 1991 . Since the 1990s, Katt has mostly appeared in guest roles on television as well as in various independent films and B-movies , among which the 2007 science fiction film The Man From Earth became famous.

William Katt was married to Deborah Kahane from 1979 until their divorce in 1986, and they have two children. He has been married to Danielle Hirsch for the second time since 1993, and he has two children with her.
