William MacGillivray

William MacGillivray, 1841

William MacGillivray (born January 25, 1796 in Old Aberdeen , † September 4, 1852 in Aberdeen) was a Scottish naturalist , ornithologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is " W.MacGill. "

Live and act

William MacGillivray studied at King's College in Aberdeen, where he graduated in 1815. He then studied medicine , but did not finish this course. In 1823 he became assistant to Robert Jameson , who was professor of natural history at Edinburgh University . In 1831 MacGillivray was appointed curator of the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh . From 1841 he taught as a professor of natural history at Marischal College in Aberdeen and was at the same time Regius Professor of Natural History for botany . In 1834 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

MacGillivray assisted John James La Forest Audubon with his Birds of America and edited William Withering's work on British plants. In 1830 he published a collection of biographies that dealt with important zoologists. A biography of Alexander von Humboldt followed two years later . MacGillivray's zoological works included mammals , molluscs and birds . His Natural History of Deeside and Braemar was published on the orders of Queen Victoria after his death .
