Mart Laanemäe

William Mart Laanemäe (born June 21, 1959 in Vancouver , Canada ) is an Estonian diplomat . From 2008 to 2012 and from 2016 to July 2019 he was the ambassador of the Republic of Estonia in Berlin .

Life

Early years

Mart Laanemäe was born into a family in exile. From 1976 to 1981 he studied applied physics at the University of British Columbia . In 1980 he was a guest student at the University of Hanover . From 1981 to 1983 he studied materials science at the University of Toronto . From 1987 to 1989 Laanemäe worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart . In 1989 he received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Stuttgart . He then worked as an engineer at MTU München GmbH until 1991 .

From 1991 to 1995 Mart Laanemäe was editor, temporarily deputy director and head of the Tallinn branch of the Estonian-language editorial team of Radio Free Europe in Munich , Tallinn and Prague . In 1995/96 he worked as a commercial director at the Estonian state joint-stock company Silmet in Sillamäe . Then he entered the diplomatic service of his country.

Diplomatic career

From 1996 to 1999 Laanemäe was Undersecretary of State for Politics, Press and Information at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia in Tallinn. From 1999 to 2003 he was the Estonian ambassador to Austria , Slovakia , Slovenia , the Czech Republic (until the beginning of 2002) and Hungary (until the end of 2001). From 2000 to 2003 he was also a permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna ( IAEA , UNOV , CTBTO ) and ambassador to Switzerland.

In 2003/2004 he was director general of the ministerial office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, then until 2008 Undersecretary for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Mart Laanemäe has been the Estonian ambassador to Germany since August 2016 (as was the case from 2008 to 2012) . In the meantime he worked as Undersecretary of State in the Estonian Foreign Ministry in Tallinn, where he was responsible for Euro-Atlantic issues.

Private life

Mart Laanemäe was first married to Riina Kionka , who was Estonian ambassador to Germany from 2000 to 2004. He got married again and has one child.
