William McCrea

Sir William Hunter McCrea (born December 13, 1904 in Dublin , † April 25, 1999 ) was an Irish astronomer and mathematician .

William McCrea was born on December 13, 1904, the eldest child of Robert Hunter McCrea and Margaret Hutton. McCrea studied at Trinity College of Cambridge University and taught at the University of Edinburgh and at Imperial College London before becoming a professor of mathematics at the 1936 Queen's University of Belfast changed.

In 1931 McCrea was elected as a full member (" Fellow ") of the Royal Society of Edinburgh . In 1952 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society . He was President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1961 to 1963 . In 1972 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1976 he was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Astronomical Society . In 1985 he was knighted ( Knight Bachelor ).
