William McCreery (politician, 1786)

William McCreery (born May 17, 1786 in Omagh , Ireland , †  September 27, 1841 in Fairfield , Pennsylvania ) was an Irish- American politician . Between 1829 and 1831 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1791, William McCreery and his parents moved from their Irish homeland to Westmoreland County , Pennsylvania. In his new home he attended a private school. In 1812 he moved to Paris , Washington County , where he worked in agriculture. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 . Between 1824 and 1827 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . He was also active in road and canal construction and was involved in the construction of the Pennsylvania State Canal and a state trunk road between 1826 and 1831 .

In the 1828 congressional election , McCreery was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Joseph Lawrence on March 4, 1829 . Since he was not confirmed in 1830, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1831 . Since President Jackson took office in 1829, there has been heated debate inside and outside of Congress about its policies. It was about the controversial enforcement of the Indian Removal Act , the conflict with the state of South Carolina , which culminated in the nullification crisis , and the banking policy of the president.

Between 1831 and 1833 McCreery worked for the Pittsburgh Treasury . From 1833 to 1836 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. In 1835 he became the overseer of the Pennsylvania State Canal . He later became acting chairman of the Pennsylvania Board of Canal Appraisers . He held this office until his death.
