William Painter

William Painter (born November 20, 1838 Ireland , † July 15, 1906 in Baltimore , Maryland ) was the inventor of the crown cap and founder of today's Crown Holdings .

William Painter was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States in 1858. There he lived in Baltimore, Maryland .

In addition to the crown cap ( 1892 ) he invented bottle openers , a machine to close bottles, a paper folding machine, a coin validator and an ejector seat for passenger trains . He held a total of 85 patents .

In 1892, Painter founded Crown Cork & Seal .

William Painter died on July 15, 1906 at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He left behind his wife and son. His son was Orrin Chalfant Painter (1864-1915), a patron of the Edgar Allen Poe Society of Baltimore.
