William Wall Fortenbaugh (born July 10, 1936 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American classical philologist and historian of philosophy .

Life

Fortenbaugh graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 1964 with a Ph.D. thesis on Aristotle's concept of deliberate choice in Classical Philology. PhD. Fortenbaugh was, after all, Professor of Classics at Rutgers University . He is now retired.

Research priorities

His main research interests are Aristotle , Theophrast and Hellenistic philosophy . Since 1979 he has headed the Theophrastus project for the collection, edition, translation and commentary on the fragments of Theophrastus. As a starting point for his work, he had a collection of fragments of Theophrastus that had originally been created by Franz Dirlmeier and then came into the hands of Andreas Graeser . With Dirlmeier's consent, he left it to Fortenbaugh for further processing. To this end, Fortenbaugh started his research career in 1976 as a Humboldt fellow at Heidelberg University and was supported there by Herwig Görgemanns , a student of Dirlmeier. He then worked closely with an international team from the USA and Europe, including Pamela Huby (Liverpool), Robert W. Sharples (London), Peter Steinmetz (Saarbrücken) and, for the Arabic texts, Dimitri Gutas (Yale) and Hans Daiber (Frankfurt am Main). From 1990 to 1991 Fortenbaugh was a fellow of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Wassenaar . In 1992 the collection of fragments was completed and printing began. The basic edition of Fragments and Testimonia was first published in two volumes in 1992, and since then nine thematically arranged volumes of commentaries by various authors have been published successively (only volumes 6 and 8 are by William W. Fortenbaugh).

Fortenbaugh is editor of Rutgers Studies in Classical Humanities (RUSCH), which is intended as a collection of accompanying publications of the Theophrast project and takes into account the entire Peripatos .
