William von Seckendorff

William Carl Adam Freiherr von Seckendorff (born October 8, 1799 in Dresden , † August 30, 1863 in Schöningen ) was a mining clerk, mineralogist and saltworks director in Schöningen.

Life

William Carl Adam von Seckendorff was born in Dresden as the son of the writer Gustav Anton von Seckendorff . After graduating from high school, he went to study at the Bergakademie Freiberg in 1816 .

After completing his studies, he entered the service of the ducal Brunswick in 1820. In 1821 he was appointed mountain jury member after Zorge und Tanne . Here he also undertook mineralogical research and published some scientific reports. In 1831 he discovered a rare mineral, arsenic-nickel , in a mine near Tanne. The mineral is still called Seckendorffit today. In 1842 he was finally appointed mountain master and was transferred to Seesen .

In 1847 von Seckendorff took over the management of the salt works in Schöningen . There he developed various methods for drilling technology.

family

He married on August 8, 1824 in Zorge Jeanette Hartmann (* June 7, 1805, † May 13, 1886), the daughter of the mining clerk Carl Friedrich Hartmann. The couple had several children:

  • Guido Arthur Hartmann (born February 18, 1829 in Tanne; † December 12, 1896 in Blumenau, Brazil), colonist in Brazil.
  • Hugo Wilhelm Hartmann (born May 14, 1825 in Zorge)
  • Bruno Gustav Hartmann (born February 25, 1827 in Tanne, † August 29, 1899 in Braunschweig ). Director of the Braunschweig-Hannoversche Hypothekenbank .
  • Helene Marie (born September 2, 1832 in Tanne)
  • Marie Therese (born January 16, 1836 in Tanne)
