Williams Lake is a city in the province of British Columbia in western Canada . It is considered the forestry capital of British Columbia and the Williams Lake Stampede , one of the largest rodeos , which attracts thousands of visitors every year on Canada Day weekend .
history
The city was formed during the great Cariboo gold rush in the 1860s when the Cariboo Road (also called Cariboo Wagon Road or Great North Road ) ran here. The city with around 10,000 inhabitants is a center in the Cariboo Regional District with many shopping opportunities and administrative offices.
Demographics
The 2011 census showed a population of 10,832 for the small town. The population has increased by 0.8% compared to the 2006 census, while the population in the entire province of British Columbia grew by 7.0% at the same time. The entire Williams Lake region (Census agglomeration) has a population of 18,490.
politics
The award of local self-government for the municipality took place on March 15, 1929 ( incorporated as Village Municipality ). The status of a small town ( Town ) was granted to Williams Lake on February 15, 1965 and confirmed as a city ( City ) on November 5, 1981.
Mayor of the parish is Walt Cobb. Together with six other citizens, it forms the council of the small town (council).
economy
Most jobs are still in the forest industry, which has been affected by a bark beetle plague in recent years . The consequences for the region cannot yet be foreseen, but the damage to the forests runs into the billions. One of the nationally known companies that are based in Williams Lake is Pioneer Log Homes , a company that builds log houses. The company is the focus of the series "Timber Kings" produced by HGTV Canada, which is also broadcast in Germany.
The median income of a Williams Lake employee was C $ 25,328 in 2006, slightly higher than the average income for the entire province of British Columbia of C $ 24,867.
traffic
The city is a transportation hub. The Cariboo Highway 97 , the Chilcotin Highway 20 , a railway line and the Greyhound Bus intersect here . Williams Lake, located on the lake of the same name, is about halfway between the towns of Kamloops in the south and Prince George in the north. Both cities are around 250 km away. The place is the last major settlement if you want to drive over the Coast Mountains to Bella Coola on the Pacific Ocean , which is almost 500 km away . The journey by car from Vancouver takes around ten hours and is on the normal route to Alaska .
Williams Lake Airport is north of the city .
