Willy Borgeaud

Willy Borgeaud actually Willy Alfred Borgeaud (born October 17, 1913 in Dardagny near Geneva ; † August 19, 1989 in Lucerne / Québec ) was a Swiss-Canadian scholar of linguistics and religion. From 1965 until his retirement in 1980 he was Professor of Latin, Greek and Comparative Grammar at the University of Ottawa .

Live and act

Borgeaud was born the son of a customs officer in Geneva and attended high school and university in his native city . In 1938 he initially completed his studies with a licentiate. At the University of Geneva , he was 1943-44 with the work en Grèce et Les Illyria in Italy: étude et linguistique mythologique Dr. phil. PhD. In the meantime, Borgeaud also carried out additional studies at German universities. With Julius Pokorny (1887–1970) on the Celtic languages, with Franz Altheim (1898–1976) in Halle on the history of religion and with Johannes Lohmann (1895–1983) on Old Persian and Sanskrit.

He then worked for three years under the direction of Walther von Wartburg (1888–1971) on the French Etymological Dictionary . He then taught in Bex , was a university assistant in Geneva and a professor of Latin and French grammar at the University of Damascus .

In 1965 Borgeaud was appointed to the University of Ottawa, where he stayed until his retirement in 1980.

Private

Borgeaud's circle of friends included, among others, the Swiss director Michel Soutter (1932–1991) and the Swiss writer Georges Haldas (1917–2010).

Willy Borgeaud was married to Marthe Roder. Their son, Philippe Borgeaud (born 1946), is professor of religious history at the University of Geneva.
