Willy Monty

Willy Monty (born October 11, 1939 in Feluy , Seneffe ; † November 9, 2014 there ) was a Belgian racing cyclist .

Athletic career

As an amateur , he won the Tour de la Province de Namur and three stages of the Tour de la Province de Liège in 1962 , as well as a number of other races. In 1962 he started at the UCI Road World Championships for Belgium and was classified sixth in the road race of the amateurs when Renato Bongioni won . Then he was at the start of the Tour de l'Avenir , which he finished in 17th place.

In 1960 he was a participant in the Summer Olympics . He drove the team time trial in the Belgian foursome , which Belgium finished in a disappointing 18th place.

From 1963 to 1971 Monty was active as a professional driver. Monty was a team helper , but was able to record some successes. He drove as a helper for Jan Janssen , Henri Anglade , Roger Pingeon and Eddy Merckx , among others .

In 1964 he was able to win a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré . A year later he won a section near Paris – Nice , as well as two stages of the Tour of Catalonia .

He competed in the Tour de France five times, and 12th in 1967 was his best overall result.

His best result in the monuments of cycling he had in 1967 when he was third in the victory of Walter Godefroot in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège race. Shortly before that, he had finished sixth in the Tour of Flanders .
