The snow-white Strandfilzblume ( Achillea maritima ) is a plant of the genus Achillea ( Achillea ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae). It thrives on the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean.

Vegetative characteristics
The snow-white beach felt flower is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 50 centimeters. The aboveground parts of the plant are hairy with thick white felts and they smell aromatic. The rising stalks lignify something.
The alternate arranged on the stems leaves are sessile with a broad base. The white felt, thick leaf blade is elongated and with entire margins or finely notched-serrate.
Generative characteristics
The total inflorescences contain four to eight cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The flower heads are spherical with a diameter of 8 to 10 millimeters and contain only tubular flowers . The bracts are white felt. The tubular flowers are golden yellow.
The achenes are curved.
The flowering period extends from June to September.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
distribution
The snow-white beach felt flower thrives on the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean from Morocco to the Sinai Peninsula and from Portugal to Ireland , from France and Italy to Cyprus , Turkey, Georgia , Syria and Israel. In the Canary Islands their originality is doubtful. In the UK and the Channel Islands is Achillea maritima occurred earlier.
Systematics
It was first published in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Filago maritima by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum , page 927. The new combination to Achillea maritima (L.) Honoring. & YP Guo was published in 2005 by Friedrich Ehrendorfer and YP Guo in Willdenowia , Volume 35, Page 50. Other synonyms for Achillea maritima (L.) Ehrend. & YP Guo are: Diotis candidissima Desf. nom. illeg., Diotis maritima (L.) Cass. , Otanthus maritimus (L.) Hoffmanns. & Link .
