Willy Prager , also Willi Prager , (born May 23, 1877 in Kattowitz , Upper Silesia ; † March 4, 1956 in Berlin-Halensee ) was a German actor , director , cabaret artist , librettist and screenwriter .

Life

Born in Upper Silesia, he began his career in 1898 at the Berlin vaudeville 'Quargs'. From 1909 onwards there were commitments to cabarets in the capital, such as Rudolf Nelson's 'Chat Noir' and the 'Linden-Cabaret'. Even before the First World War, Prague could be seen at regular theaters in the capital (e.g. at the Hebbeltheater and at Max Reinhardt's German Theater , where he also worked as a director). In 1912 alone, under Reinhardt's direction, he played such diverse roles as the bald belly in Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening , Polonius in Hamlet , the treasurer in Faust and Antonio in Much Ado About Nothing . In the same year Wedekind staged a performance of his own work The Marquis of Keith with Prager in the role of Krenzl . Since 1925, Willy Prager has worked at the cabaret Schall und Rauch , made a name for himself as a comedian and couplet singer , including in the music revue It is in the air and also wrote several operetta librettos (for example, on Ralph Benatzky's love in the snow and Die kleine Sünderin, Die Princess of the Nile and the Review To all ).

Since his debut under Reinhardt's direction (as Triton, one of the gods, in The Isle of the Blessed ), Prager has also appeared sporadically in front of the camera. At the beginning of the sound film , he participated in several comedy screenplays. After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, Prager was soon banned from performing, which did not end until 1945. Prager spent most of these years underground. Then he returned to the theater (for example Berlin's Die Tribüne ) and with film roles in front of the camera.
