Schall und Rauch is the name of a literary cabaret in Berlin that was founded in 1901 by Max Reinhardt , among others . Since the end of January 1902 it was nicknamed the Small Theater .

Emergence

In a pub in the Berlin suburbs, poets like Christian Morgenstern , painters, musicians and actors, especially from the German theater , met regularly for a regulars' table called “Die Brille” , where people can enjoy conversation and drink out of pure “fun in joy” literary chansons, humorous literary miniatures and scenes, even whole parodic one-act plays. Max Reinhardt - at that time still a young, aspiring director - came up with the idea of presenting the resulting showcase pieces to the public. For this purpose, a literary cabaret was founded. The name Schall und Rauch supposedly came about because one couldn't think of anything else and, according to Goethe, the name is “Schall und Rauch”.

opening

The successful opening program of the Schall und Rauch cabaret took place in the spring of 1901 in Berlin's Bellevuestrasse and consisted, among other things, of the Don Carlos trilogy at the turn of the century , namely three parodies of Friedrich von Schiller's play Don Karlos - along with the highlight Don Carlos on the Schmiere became in the other two versions the style of Maeterlinck and Gerhart Hauptmann is parodied - and an atmospheric picture from a theater rehearsal The directors' college from the pen of Max Reinhardt.

In addition to Max Reinhardt himself, z. B. Friedrich Kayssler , Martin Zickel , Else Heims and Richard Vallentin participate in the program.

After a few more performances in Bellevuestrasse, which the audience literally flocked to, the cabaret got its permanent seat from October 1901 in a hall of the Viktoria Hotel Unter den Linden , the floor of which offered four hundred seats.

Already in the season 1902 / 1903 was from the cabaret smoke and mirrors , the Little Theater . Reinhardt continued it as a pure theater.

Post fame

The Schall und Rauch cabaret has remained a household name to this day, although as an independent cabaret stage it only delighted the Berlin audience for one season and even during this period it was increasingly distancing itself from the parody and coming closer to the theater.

In the basement of Max Reinhardt's Great Playhouse, however, a new Schall und Rauch was later set up, in which artists such as Werner Richard Heymann , Friedrich Hollaender , Kurt Tucholsky , Klabund , Walter Mehring , Mischa Spoliansky , Joachim Ringelnatz and Blandine Ebinger had the opportunity to perform cabaret operate.

Thomas Mann classified the brief era of smoke and mirrors after Reinhardt's death as follows: “At the beginning of the rebirth of the theater from the spirit of the theater stood the parody. We young people in Munich, members of an academic-dramatic association to whom the Reinhardt people played their Don Carlos parody, laughed tears. "

From the early 1960s, the Telefunken record company dedicated a whole series of records to Reinhardt's cabaret called Schall & Rauch , in which well-known actors such as B. Theo Lingen and Heinz Reincke re-enacted chansons, parodies and pieces from the Schall und Rauch programs.
