Wilt Aden Schröder (2011)

Wilt Aden Schröder (born March 19, 1942 in Hamburg ) is a German classical philologist . His research focus is the history of classical philology .

Life

Schröder attended Wilhelm-Gymnasium (Hamburg) , studied Classical Philology and Ancient History at the University of Hamburg and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . His dissertation, an annotated edition of the fragments of the first book by Catos Origines , appeared in 1971 in the series Contributions to Classical Philology (Volume 41). From 1970 to 1972 he worked as a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin (at Chair II for Classical Philology with Eckart Mensching ). He then worked in the same position at the University of Hamburg (as an academic councilor and senior councilor), on leave from 1977 to 1979 to take on a habilitation grant from the German Research Foundation . After completing his habilitation (1982), he spent one semester as a substitute professor in Göttingen (summer semester 1984) and was made a temporary professor at the University of Hamburg in 1985. In 1988 he was permanently appointed professor "in the function of an academic senior councilor". In 2006 he retired.

Since the 1990s Schröder has been concerned with the history of classical philology, especially with that of the 19th and 20th centuries. In addition to studies on Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff , Hermann Diels , Rudolf Schöll , Eduard Hiller , Eduard Fraenkel and Günther Jachmann , he stood out in particular through his monograph on Eduard Norden ( The ancient scientist Eduard Norden (1868–1941). The fate of a German scholar of Jewish Origin , Hildesheim / Zurich / New York 1999). He wrote numerous articles for the Biographical Lexicon for Ostfriesland and the New German Biography . On the website of the Teuchos Center , he makes the results of his research in scholarly historical prosopography available.
