Winand M. Wigger

Winand Michael Wigger (born December 9, 1841 in New York City , † January 5, 1901 in Newark ) was the third Catholic bishop of Newark .

Life

Winand M. Wigger, son of Westphalian immigrants, studied at Seton Hall College and Brignole Sale College in Genoa . On October 10, 1865, he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Newark in Genoa .

After two years as a pastor at Newark Cathedral, he went to Rome to do a doctorate. After his return in 1869 he worked in various parishes.

On August 2, 1881, Pope Leo XIII appointed Wigger to Bishop of Newark and at the same time hived off the Diocese of Trenton from the previous diocese territory. The episcopal ordination received his his predecessor Michael Corrigan , Koadjutorerzbischof of New York , on October 18 the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Brooklyn , John Loughlin , and the Bishop of Rochester , Bernard John Joseph McQuaid .

As a bishop, he campaigned for the preservation of German-speaking congregations and schools, stood against efforts for an American national church that was independent of Europe and laid the foundation stone of today's Newark Cathedral.
