Bernard John Joseph McQuaid (born December 15, 1823 in New York City , USA , † January 18, 1909 in Rochester , New York ) was Bishop of Rochester .

Life

Bernard John Joseph McQuaid attended school in Chambly . McQuaid then studied philosophy and Catholic theology at St. John's Seminary in Fordham . He received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of New York on January 16, 1848 .

Then Bernard John Joseph McQuaid was pastor in Madison . In 1853 he became rector of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Newark . In addition, McQuaid was in 1866 Vicar General of the Diocese of Newark . He was also the first president of Seton Hall College in South Orange .

On March 3, 1868, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Rochester. The Archbishop of New York, John McCloskey , ordained him episcopal on July 12 of the same year at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Newark , James Roosevelt Bayley , and the Bishop of Burlington , Louis De Goesbriand .

Bernard John Joseph McQuaid attended the First Vatican Council .

The McQuaid Jesuit High School was named after him.
