The Asseln wind farm is located on the Paderborn plateau near the village of Asseln (Lichtenau) in the Paderborn district , ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). At the time of its inauguration in 1997, it was the largest inland wind farm in Europe with 66 wind turbines and 36.55 megawatts. The wind farm is in close proximity to the Sintfeld wind farm .

history

Planning began in 1995. Construction work began in April 1997, the first plants produced electricity in December 1997 and the last work was completed in May 1998. The wind farm extends over an area of 380 hectares, of which 2.3 hectares are built or paved roads. The park's systems generate around 65 million kilowatt hours of electrical energy per year, which corresponds to an average output of 7.4 MW. About 25 percent of the construction work was carried out by local companies. 66 percent of the wind turbines are owned by local citizens. The wind farm was partially funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The wind park has been expanded since 2015 with the construction of new wind turbines.

Mains connection

The wind turbines are predominantly to the power grid connected to the public supply. The responsible distribution network operators are Westfalen Weser Netz and Westnetz . There is also a ten-kilometer direct connection to the Benteler plant in Kleinenberg (Lichtenau) .

Accidents

  • A wind turbine made by Südwind overturned in 1999 as a result of a winter storm. It was replaced by a new system.
  • In December 2007, a fitter fell 10 meters deep in a plant.
  • At the beginning of May 2012, lightning struck a turbine rotor blade, causing part of the rotor to break off.

Compensatory measure

The compensation area of the wind farm covers 30 hectares. In this context, strips of wood were laid out and 5 hectares of fish pond renatured.

Installed wind turbines

The wind farm has wind turbines from the companies AN Bonus, Enercon , NEG Micon , Nordex , Südwind, Tacke and Vestas .
