Winfried Baumann (officer)

Winfried Baumann (born May 17, 1930 in Scharley as Winfried Zakrzowski, † July 18, 1980 in Leipzig ) was a German frigate captain . In his last military service he was department head of the intelligence administration at the MfNV of the GDR before he was released in 1970 for alcoholism .

From around 1977 he worked for the Federal Intelligence Service (BND). He forwarded the news by letters to cover addresses of the BND. Together with his partner , he was exposed by the MfS during the intensive surveillance of the postal traffic from the GDR and arrested in June 1979. Baumann was sentenced to death on July 9, 1980 . After rejection of his plea for mercy Baumann was in the prison Leipzig (Alfred-Kästner-Straße) transferred . In which "the central place of execution " converted caretaker's judgment was executioner Hermann Lorenz by headshotcarried out. The corpse was then taken to the crematorium at the Leipzig South Cemetery and cremated there; the ashes were anonymously buried in the cemetery area.

His partner, the divorced doctor Christa-Karin Schumann, who had established contact with the BND through her relatives in the Federal Republic and who had actively participated in the transmission of the news, received a 15-year prison sentence and was ransomed in 1987 .
