Wiprecht von Rosenbach (* 1549 ; † February 15, 1607 in Heitersheim ) was from 1599 to 1601 Großbailli of the Order of St. John. He was then from 1601 to 1607 Grand Prior of Germany of the Order of St. John and Prince of Heitersheim .

life and career

Wiprecht von Rosenbach was born in 1549 as the son of Konrad von Rosenbach zu Lindheim and Agnes von Buches zu Staden . The ancestral seat of the von Rosenbach family was Rosenbach Castle, in the hamlet of Rosenbach near Hainstadt , which in the Middle Ages belonged to the County of Wertheim in the Breuberg domain . The sex was also wealthy in the county of Erbach.

On August 18, 1567 he entered the Order of St. John in Malta and then probably performed the services required by the statutes in Malta. On October 7, 1571, he fought on the order's galleys against the Ottoman fleet. The Battle of Lepanto ended with a great victory for the Holy League , but the naval forces of the Order of St. John involved in the battle suffered heavy losses. The flagship of the Johanniter Santa Maria della Vittoria was boarded by the Ottomans, and the Commander-in-Chief Pietro Giustiani and many other knights of the Order of St. John were killed, including the German Grand Bailli Ludwig Joachim Sparr von Trampe in Brandenburg. In 1573 Wiprecht von Rosenbach became the administrator of the Kommende Freiburg im Üechtland, an office he held until 1576. In 1577 he became commander of the commander in Basel and Rheinfelden , which he held until 1600 and in the same year he was commander of the commander in Hohenrain and Reiden, which he chaired until 1594. On June 21, 1591 he was deputy of the Großbailli and received the committees Rohrdorf and Dätzinngen (1592 to 1600). From May 25, 1594 to August 20, 1598 he also held the title of Prior of Dacia . In addition he received the Kommende Schwäbisch Hall (based in Affaltrach). On October 8, 1599 he was appointed Großbailli. For the years 1600 and 1601 he is still recorded as commander of the Johanniterkommende Rottweil . Finally, on March 31, 1601, Wiprecht von Rosenbach was appointed Grand Prior of the Order of St. John in Germany. He also became commander of Bubikon . He died on February 15, 1607 in Heitersheim and was buried in the local Johanniterkirche. His epitaph has been preserved and is placed on the west wall of today's Bartholomäus Church in Heitersheim, built in 1826.
