Witchblade - The weapon of the gods (Original title: Witchblade ) is an American mystery and action series by Ralph Hemecker . It is based on the comic of the same name by Marc Silvestri , David Wohl , Brian Haberlin and Michael Turner . The series first aired on June 12, 2001 on the US television channel TNT . It was first broadcast in German on January 7, 2004 on RTL II .

action

The main character of the series is Sara Pezzini, a homicide detective who receives a mysterious bracelet, the Witchblade, in the series' pilot. The ancient relic previously belonged to Joan of Arc and gives its wearer superhuman powers. In addition to the ability to intercept bullets, it allows the wearer to see the past and the future and can also be used as an effective weapon. To do this, it is transformed into a glove with an extendable blade. But the weapon also has a life of its own. So she magically attracts mysterious incidents, in Sara Pezzini's case mainly crimes, and sometimes acts against the will of the wearer. It is up to Sara Pezzini to master the powers of the Witchblade and use them skillfully.

season 1

The focal point of the first season is the secret police organization White Bull . Corrupt police officers gather in this secret society who execute criminals and enrich themselves from them. Pezzini comes across this organization during a private investigation into her dead adoptive father and also comes into their line of fire. Kenneth Irons, CEO of Proposition Industries, and his foster son Ian Nottingham also play a role . While Ian has a strange relationship with Sara, Keneth tries to harness the power of the Witchblade for his own ends. Sara kills her enemies in a showdown but watches all of her friends die. She uses one power only possible per wearer and turns back time to the beginning of the season when she receives the Witchblade.

season 2

In season 2, different decisions are made than in the first season. The story therefore unfolds differently. Initially, Kenneth is killed by Sara with the Witchblade and Ian now heads Proposal Industries. Sara's opponent is “Cyberfaust”, a mysterious criminal who pulls the strings in the dark and provides Sara with clues. In fact, behind it is Irons, who, as a former carrier of the Witchblade, could not be killed by her. He sends another Witchblade contender into the race, who is defeated by Sara. Then he tries to grab the Witchblade himself, but is pulled into the Witchblade by Sarah and killed there.

main characters

Sara Pezzini

The person wearing the Witchblade is a homicide detective. She was abandoned as a child and passed on by Lazar to her later adoptive father, James Pezzini. This was also a police officer who was killed in action by Captain Bruno Dante. Sara has a strong bond with her adoptive father, her real father is unknown. She shares her external appearance with the previous wearers of the Witchblade. Your love life is full of tragedy. In season 1, she falls in love with the Irish rock singer Conchobar, who is killed in a hostage-taking. In season 2, her relationship partner is the immortal Daniel Germaine, who was condemned by Jesus to live forever. Only through the Witchblade can he experience redemption.

Jake McCartey

Jake McCartey is Pezzini's partner in the first season, ostensibly a "freshman" from the police academy. He should be trained by Sara. In fact, he works as an FBI agent and is after the "White Bull" gang. In the second season he is also a freshman, but only has a supporting role.

Kenneth Irons

Kenneth Irons is CEO of Proposition Industries, a powerful global corporation. His character is devious and vicious. He is several hundred years old and has been rejuvenated again and again by the blood of the Witchblade wearers. His goal is to use the Witchblade, or rather the person who wears it, to gain more power. If he is one of the main villains in the first season, he dies in the second season after attacking Sara with the Longinus lance . From then on he appears to his foster son Ian Nottingham and Sara in visions.

Ian Nottingham

Ian Nottingham, cloned from the DNA of a Witchblade wearer, grew up with Kenneth Irons, who instructed him in various martial arts and trained him to be a dangerous killer. Ian is closely connected to Sara and has almost fallen ill. In the first season he is Irons servant, but with his own will and acts against his will if Sara could use it. In season two, he heads Proposal Industries after the death of Irons. The conflict with Sara, whom he adores but also hates because of the death of his "father", is more pronounced here.

Danny Woo

Danny Woo is also a homicide detective. He was Sara's partner before Jake in season one, but was shot dead in the pilot. Since then he has appeared in Sara's visions and gives her helpful, but often cryptic tips. In the second season, after Sara turned back the clock and thus prevented his death, he is Sara's partner and a caring family man.

Supporting characters

Lazar

Lazar brought Sara to her adoptive father. He appears in various forms, mostly as a homeless person, repeatedly in individual episodes.

Gabriel Bowman

Gabriel Bowman runs the artifact shop Talismaniac.com and provides Sara with information about the Witchblade, but also about other mystical objects and people.

Captain Bruno Dante

Captain Bruno Dante is Sara's superior and leader of the "White Bulls" in the first season.

Vicky Po

Vicky Po is a coroner at the police station.

Guest stars

In individual episodes, guest stars appear who actually come from the music business. So does Joe Butler (ex- The Lovin 'Spoonful and father of Yancy) in two episodes of the character Arnold Buck. Roger Daltrey ( The Who ) took on a small role as Father Del Toro. Keith Moon's drums also play a role in the series. It is given to Sara in both seasons, once by Gabriel Bowman and once by Daniel Germaine.

Charisma

The pilot for the series was broadcast on August 27, 2000 on the US television station TNT . The series itself aired almost a year later on June 12, 2001. It achieved some top ratings, some around 35 million viewers in the United States. A total of 24 episodes were produced in two seasons before the series was discontinued. It was first broadcast in German on January 7, 2004 on RTL II . From June 1, 2005, the series was also shown in Austria on ORF 1 .

background

The television series, with all the mystical elements, is more realistic than the comic series. In particular, the role of Sara Pezzini is far less revealing than in the comics.

During the filming of the second season there were delays due to a Yancy Butler alcohol problem. They had to be put back by three weeks to wait for Butler to be released from recuperation .
