Witold Benedyktowicz

Witold Benedyktowicz (born June 25, 1921 in Krakow , Poland , † January 21, 1997 in Warsaw ) was a Polish Methodist pastor , main superintendent of the Methodist Church in the People's Republic of Poland , university professor and President of the Polish Ecumenical Council .

Life

After graduating from secondary school in his native Kraków, he decided under occupation conditions to study at the Biblical University in Warsaw , where professors from the closed area of ​​Protestant theology of the University of Warsaw lectured. After the Second World War he was delegated to Masuria to devote himself to pastoral work there. In 1947 he was ordained pastor and then decided to study theology at the Ecumenical Institute Bossey / Switzerland , which was under the patronage of the World Council of Churches .

In 1950 he obtained his master's degree in Protestant theology at the University of Warsaw. Its promoter was Prof. Jan Szeruda . Four years later he defended a doctorate on the idea of ​​the breakthrough in Methodism , and in 1965 he obtained his habilitation on the basis of the sample of Christian irenology. Prague experiences . From 1972 he was associate professor and from 1980 full professor . From 1967 he was employed at the Christian Theological Academy as holder of the chair for systematic theology . From 1985 to 1988 he was a member of the Supreme Council of Higher Education. From 1958 he took over the editorial management of the magazine Pielgrzym Polski (Polish Pilgrims).

Since the beginning of the 1950s he was pastor in the Methodist Church in Warsaw . From 1969 to 1983, he was the chief superintendent of the Methodist Church in the People's Republic of Poland . From 1975 to 1983 he was President of the Polish Ecumenical Council and delegate at Congresses for Ecumenism and Peace. From 1986 to 1989 he sat on the Consultative Council with the Chairman of the State Council .

Benedyktowicz was one of the founders and activists of the Christian Peace Conference (CFK). He was already involved in their third pre-conference in 1960, and he took part in all six All-Christian Peace Assemblies (ACFV) from 1961 to 1985, where he was elected as a member of the subsequent committees.
