The Wittekindsweg is a signposted hiking trail on the ridge of the Wiehengebirge in Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia . It is a section of the European long-distance hiking trail E11 and is one of the hiking trails maintained by the Wiehengebirgsverband Weser-Ems .
The Wittekindsweg runs for a good 95 km from Barkhausen , located at Porta Westfalica in the east, over the wooded ridge of the Wiehen Mountains to Osnabrück . The path is marked with a white and red double line. About 90% of the length of the Wiehengebirge is accessible through the Wittekindsweg. The westernmost section of the Wiehengebirge from the other side of the Mittellandkanal located Larberger Harrow on the Penter and Schleptruper harrow until after Engter / Mühlenort (about 11 km) is not the Wittekindsweg but to Osnabrück Canal by the Hünenweg developed. The Wittekindsweg can easily be mastered in four sections. The elevation profile shows some transverse valleys that interrupt the ridge. The western part is flatter and more tapered.
On the way there are a number of sights, such as the Kaiser Wilhelm monument at Porta Westfalica , foundations of the cross church from the 10th century at the Wittekindsburg , the open-air theater Kahle Wart in Oberbauerschaft , the Bismarck monument at Nonnenstein , the dinosaur tracks from Barkhausen ( Bad Essen ) and the town hall in Osnabrück .
The path is named after the Saxon Duke Wittekind . At Börninghausen, the Wittekindsweg crosses the Sachsenweg, also named in honor of Wittekind .
