The Wittmarkapelle , on the road 3075 between Volkmarsen and Welda (each 2.5 km away in a south-north direction), is a Romanesque church in the Wittmar desert in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg . The small church is located 182 m above sea level in the Twiste valley at the western foot of the 261 m high Kollenberg, about 1.2 km south of the Hessian border with North Rhine-Westphalia . It is a branch of the Catholic parish church St. Marien in Volkmarsen.

history

The church was built around 930, probably on the site of an older predecessor building, which probably played an important role as the Anabaptist church at the time of Christianization in the region. (There are several interpretations of the name Wittmar, one version of which suggests a pre-Christian Germanic cult site on site.) The new church was probably originally a three-aisled, vaulted hall church , as indicated by the walled-up arcades between the central nave, which has been preserved in three bays , and the vanished side aisles , but is only single-aisle today.

The church was a parish church and is mentioned as such in 1499. The church in Volkmarsen, dedicated to St. Laurentius , the remains of which can still be seen today at the "Vikarie" and which was replaced by the church of St. Mary as the town church after 1260, was a branch of the church in Wittmar and the pastor there. At the latest after the fall of Henry the Lion , the patronage rights were in the hands of the Counts of Everstein , who were also court lords of Wittmar. They enfeoffed Messrs Groppe von Gudenberg in whole or in part with court and church patronage. In 1237 or 1239 the patronage went to the Augustinian choir women - Aroldessen Abbey : Theoderich Groppe von Gudenberg (1213–1241) handed over his patronage rights over the churches of Wittmar, Volkmarsen and Benfeld (Benvilte) in 1237 for his salvation to the monastery, and in 1239 transferred it Otto II von Everstein also his rights to the three churches of the Aroldessen monastery. In 1251 the brothers Dietrich and Conrad Groppe von Gudenberg once again confirmed the donation of the church by their father Dietrich to the Aroldessen monastery.

Wittmar fell in desolation by the 16th century at the latest .

Renovation and current use

From 2000 to 2003 the church dedicated to St. Mary and St. Martin was extensively renovated. A bell was consecrated during a service at the end of the renovation work on Ascension Day 2003. Since then, fairs have been held regularly on Thursdays in the summer months . In addition, every year on Ascension Day there is a procession followed by a service in Wittmar.
