December 1940 in Naoza , Mtskheta-Mtianeti , † 1. February 1964 in Tbilisi ) was a Soviet Wrestler . He was world champion in 1961 and bronze medalist at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome in freestyle wrestling, featherweight.

Life

Vladimir Rubashvili comes from North Ossetia . He started wrestling in 1955 and when his talent was revealed he was delegated to Dinamo Tbilisi . He developed into one of the best Soviet free style wrestlers in featherweight at a young age. In 1960 he took 3rd place in the Soviet featherweight championship behind G. Kirokosian from Ordzhonikidze (now Vladikavkaz ) and J. Juschkow from Leningrad . In 1961 he was Soviet champion ahead of S. Gadschiew from Makhachkala and Koshkin from Tallinn . In 1962 he won the Soviet featherweight championship for the second time and also took first place in 1963 at the Peoples Partakiade of the USSR in featherweight ahead of Nodar Kokashvili from Ordzhonikidze.

At the international level, Rubashvili, who was an extremely strong, but also technically mature, but sometimes a little careless wrestler, first started at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . There, as a 19-year-old newcomer, he still had to pay the hard way, because he lost unnecessarily in the second round to the Pakistani Muhamad Akhtar and in the 6th round finally against Stancho Kolew from Bulgaria , but still won the bronze medal.

In 1961 Rubashvili was world featherweight champion in Yokohama with four wins despite a loss to Tamiji Sato from Japan . In 1962 he was unable to defend this title due to an injury.

In 1963 he was back at the World Cup in Sofia , but surprisingly did not come into its own there, because he lost to the Finn Tauno Jaskari and the outstanding Japanese Osamu Watanabe and ended up in 15th place, which was completely unacceptable for a Soviet wrestler.

Rubashvili no longer got an opportunity to rehabilitate himself. In the spring of 1964 he had a fatal accident.
