Wolf Schäfer (economist)

Wolf Schäfer (born July 14, 1941 in Hamburg ; † February 22, 2020 in Kiel ) was a German economist ; from 1981 until his retirement he was Professor of Economics at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg.

Life

Wolf Schäfer studied economics from 1963 to 1968 at the University of Kiel and the Free University of Berlin . From 1968 to 1970 he was a research assistant at the Institute for the World Economy at the University of Kiel, where he studied with Erich Schneider in 1970 at the Dr. sc. pol. received his doctorate. After working as a research assistant at the Collaborative Research Center 17 of the DFG (Scandinavia and Baltic Sea Region Research ) and at the Institute for Theoretical Economics, he received his habilitation in 1977, venia legendi for economics. After a substitute professor at the University of Dortmund (1979 to 1980), Wolf Schäfer was appointed to the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg in 1981 . In 1984 Wolf Schäfer was visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley , USA. From 2003 to 2005 he was Vice President of the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg. He was the founding president of the now closed private Hanseatic University .

His main research interests were the theory and politics of foreign trade and money, European integration and macroeconomics . Wolf Schäfer regularly wrote articles in online media, for example for the blog “ Die Freie Welt ”.

Schäfer was, with Renate Ohr , the initiator of the euro-critical manifesto The Monetary Policy Decisions of Maastricht: A Danger for Europe (1992) and he was a signatory of the Hamburg Appeal (2005).
