Wolfgang Binsfeld

Wolfgang Binsfeld (born December 21, 1928 in Essen ; † May 20, 2011 in Trier ) was a German classical and Roman provincial archaeologist .

Life

During the Second World War , Binsfeld had to take part in military service as an air force helper. In 1948 he passed the Abitur at the Quirinus-Gymnasium in Neuss . He then studied Classical Archeology at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne , where he received his doctorate on October 15, 1956 under Andreas Rumpf . During his studies he became a member of the Catholic student associations KDStV Staufia Bonn in the Cartell Association of Catholic German Student Associations (CV) . In 1957/58 he received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . He then worked at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz and at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne. From 1965 he worked as chief curator and later deputy director at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier , in 1992 he retired. In the 1977/78 winter semester, he took on a teaching position in Roman provincial and classical archeology at the University of Trier, and in 1979 he was appointed honorary professor.
