Wolfgang Braun (born July 27, 1939 in Magdeburg ; † May 19, 2016 there ) was a German lawyer and politician ( CDU , DSU ).

Life

Wolfgang Braun attended elementary school in Magdeburg and obtained secondary school leaving certificate. 1964 to 1968 he studied economics at the college for domestic trade in Dresden . 1974 to 1978 he studied at the Humboldt University Berlin and the Martin Luther University Halle and graduated as a lawyer . From 1987 he worked as a legal advisor for VEB Altstoffhandel and later held the same position for the wholesale company Magdeburg-Südost-Fermersleben.

Wolfgang Braun was a Protestant, married and had one child.

politics

In 1961 he joined the Eastern CDU . In 1967 he left the party, but rejoined in 1984. From 1987 to 1989 he was deputy CDU city chairman in Magdeburg and since February 1990 deputy state chairman of the CDU Saxony-Anhalt .

With the first free Volkskammer election in 1990 , he was elected as a member of the People's Chamber for constituency 10 (Magdeburg) and in the same year held the office of government representative for the Magdeburg district .

On November 2, 1990, he was appointed Minister of the Interior in the government of the state of Saxony-Anhalt led by Prime Minister Gerd Gies . Five days later he replaced the retired MP Peter Renger in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt . During his tenure, he mainly dealt with the rebuilding of the ministry. In the following years, however, he came under criticism of his own parliamentary group due to his inscrutable personnel policy in the area of ​​the state police and the lack of security measures after the egg-throwing at the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl.

After allegations had been made against Braun that he had previously worked as an unofficial employee (IM) for Department K I of the Magdeburg criminal police, he resigned on July 4, 1991 together with the Prime Minister. He then became the head of a security company. He switched to the DSU in 1992 and remained a non-attached member of the state parliament until 1994 . He was honorary chairman of the German Forest Protection Association, State Association of Saxony-Anhalt.
