Wolfgang Ernst (* 1959 ) is a German cultural and media scholar . He is professor for media theories at the chair for media studies at Humboldt University .

Life

Ernst studied history , archeology and Latin at the Universities of Cologne , London and Bochum . He did his doctorate on the historical aesthetics of antique collections and worked as a speaker at the German National Academic Foundation . Wolfgang Ernst taught as a guest lecturer in Leipzig and Kassel . He spent a year of research at the German Historical Institute in Rome and worked in the cultural semiotics research group on the research focus on literary studies in Berlin. From 1995 to 1999 he was a research assistant for theory and archeology of media in the art context at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne . Between 1997 and 2003 he represented several professorships at the Bauhaus University Weimar , the Ruhr University Bochum, the University of Paderborn and the Humboldt University in Berlin . Wolfgang Ernst worked with the bootlab Berlin together and took on the project media theater of Till Nikolaus von Heiseler part where it comes to experimental theory formats.

In 2001 he completed his habilitation at the Humboldt University in Berlin on German memory organizations in the 19th and 20th centuries and has been Professor of German Media Theory at the Chair of Media Studies there since April 2003. From 2015 to 2017 Wolfgang Ernst was managing director of the Institute for Music and Media Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Wolfgang Ernst deals with "media archeology" and "media time". This includes considerations about real-time data transfers as well as machine processes when storing in archives and the "sonic". In his institute Ernst maintains what is known as a “media archaeological fund”, a collection of historically influential computers and magnetophones.
