from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Gerke (born February 3, 1944 in Cuxhaven ) is a retired German university professor for banking and stock exchange and has been president of the “Bavarian Financial Center” since 2006. Gerke is often used as an expert on banking and stock market topics in print media, radio and television and has become known to a wider public as a result.

education and profession

Gerke studied in Saarbrücken. He received his doctorate in 1972 and completed his habilitation in 1978 at the University of Frankfurt . He then held chairs for banking and finance at the University of Passau (1978 to 1981), the University of Mannheim (1981 to 1992) and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (1992-2006). In addition, he held the position of research professor at the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim and was co-editor of the journal Die Betriebswirtschaft (DBW).

Since his retirement in 2006, Wolfgang Gerke has worked together with Elmar Helten as President of the “Bavarian Financial Center”, which aims to network companies from the financial sector in Bavaria with science and thus to help strengthen Bavaria's financial center. In addition to this role, Wolfgang Gerke was Academic Director, Scientific Director of the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management until 2007 and has been honorary professor in the Finance, Accounting & Real Estate department at the EBS University of Economics and Law International University Schloss Reichartshausen in Oestrich- Angle. In addition, Wolfgang Gerke is a member of the Münchner Finance Forum eV

His frequent appearances on radio and television as an expert in banking and stock exchange have given him a high level of awareness among the German-speaking population. He received criticism for his commitment to the company Solar Millennium Invest (SMI), a subsidiary of the listed Solar Millennium AG ; Insolvency proceedings were opened for the latter in February 2012, and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority began investigations into insider trading .

Public criticism

Wolfgang Gerke recently came under public criticism through his involvement with Solar Millennium , a company that specializes in the planning and implementation of solar thermal power plants. Gerke first appeared as a guest speaker at the company's general meeting in 2005. A short time later, Solar Millennium went public. Gerke praised the company's prospects and highlighted the opportunities of the IPO for Solar Millennium AG and its shareholders. In the related press release in the run-up to the IPO, Gerke is quoted as saying: "Solar Millennium AG shares would in principle also be suitable for long-term commitments due to the company's international market orientation, since the solar thermal power generation market is not directly dependent on political changes at the German federal level be." To date, the share has lost almost 99 percent of its value based on the first price on the Munich Stock Exchange at EUR 10.00 (as of March 2012). In December 2011, the company filed for bankruptcy. Gerke is now confronted with the accusation of having raised the drum for the company. When the group went bankrupt, around 30,000 investors and shareholders are believed to have lost a three-digit million amount.

A process that is supposed to be related to an appointment in 2010 is also viewed critically. In March 2010, Gerke became a partner in Solar Millennium Invest, which was to sell corporate bonds, profit participation rights and fund shares to investors for the parent company Solar Millennium AG. The renowned university professor commented on the purpose of the new company at the time with the words: "For me this is an innovative and promising answer to the financial market crisis and the credit crunch." He held 45 percent of the company shares through an intermediary company. According to a report in the Süddeutsche Zeitung on March 17, 2012, Gerke is said not to have raised the necessary capital for this investment from his own resources. Rather, Solar Millennium is said to have granted him an advance payment of EUR 500,000 on commissions. In addition, Gerke is said to have received 275,000 euros as a loan. In August 2011, Gerke finally sold his stake in Solar Millennium AG. In connection with this disinvestment, Gerke is said to have received a settlement amounting to 400,000 euros. Solar Millennium insolvency administrator Volker Böhm would now like to examine this process carefully. Wolfgang Gerke is still a member of the supervisory board of Solar Millennium Invest AG.

During his time as a member of the Supervisory Board of WGF AG , Gerke approved of its corporate strategy and the bonds issued for refinancing. In 2012, WGF AG filed for bankruptcy.

Reaction to stock market slump in January 2008

“We are still a long way from reaching the end of the flagpole. 2008 will be a bad year for the stock market. ”“ It was thought that Germany would get away with it. But the dent in the economy is coming, ”said Gerke - even if so far hardly anything has been seen in the real economic data.
