career

VfR Mannheim, 1962 to 1971

On February 10, 1963, the 22nd matchday of the 1962/63 round in the Oberliga Süd , the young player Wolfgang Platz made his debut in the contract team of VfR Mannheim. Coach Helmut Kronsbein brought him into action together with Dieter Sagray and Karl-Heinz Kott in the 1-1 draw in the home game against KSV Hessen Kassel in the VfR runner row. Since the German champions of 1949 were not nominated for the new Bundesliga from the 1963/64 season, the VfR played its association games in the second division of the Regionalliga Süd from this point on.

Platz played from 1963 to 1971 for VfR Mannheim in the Regionalliga Süd. In the first two rounds he was not part of the regular line-up of lawn players with 17 and 10 appearances respectively. In the first year of the Regionalliga he was still a talent at the side of top performers Rudolf Bast (27 goals), goalkeeper Hans Benzler and center runner Hans-Jürgen Wäckerle . On January 5, 1964 Platz had made his debut in the regional league at home against ESV Ingolstadt (1: 1). He played on the half- left in the World Cup system and formed the left wing with Dieter Sagray . VfR took sixth place with coach Hans Pilz . From the round of 1965/66 onwards, the place that mostly played the left wing position was always part of the regular line-up of the “blue-white-reds”. He achieved the best placement with VfR in the 1966/67 season under coach Oswald Pfau when he reached fifth place alongside teammates such as Hans Benzler, Walter Duttenhofer , Ernst Tober , Günter Rehbein , Heinz Schmitt , Franz Schäffner and Klaus Beckfeld , Lutz Streitenbürger , Karl-Heinz Certa and Gerold Stocker . Platz had played all 34 rounds and scored one goal. When the successor to striker Bast, Franz Schäffner, moved to Munich in 1968/69, things went down in the table (14th place). Even the defensive qualities of Rainer Ulrich , the outstanding playful talent of Dietmar Danner and the midfield presence of Wolfgang Platz could not prevent VfR Mannheim from being relegated in the 1970/71 round . Under the coaches Karl Vetter and Kurt Keuerleber, the lawn players lost the race for a saving 15th place, one point behind SSV Reutlingen. Platz had played all 36 competitive games in the 19 season and also scored seven goals. After 232 games (19 goals) in the Regionalliga Süd for VfR, Platz signed a contract with Karlsruher SC in the summer of 1971 - as did his teammate Rainer Ulrich .

The Mannheim local derbies represented special moments for Platz in his VfR time. The first played the midfielder 1963/64 on February 16, 1964 in a 1: 3 away defeat in front of 10,000 spectators against SV Waldhof. In the 1968/69 round , the rise of VfL Neckarau brought a third Mannheim representative to the Regionalliga. The two games against the blue-whites from the Altriper ferry, who are supervised by coach father Philipp Rohr , resulted in 3-1 points for VfR, as did the two games against Waldhof (1-1; 1-0). The last derby against the blue-blacks from SV Waldhof took place in the 1969/70 season, as Waldhof was relegated to the amateur camp in the summer of 1970. On March 1, 1970, Waldhof and VfR parted with 1: 1. Platz had brought his club into the lead with a converted penalty in the 73rd minute, Günter Sebert also managed to equalize 1: 1 with a penalty in the 82nd minute.

Karlsruher SC, 1971 to 1974

KSC coach Heinz Baas immediately trusted the newcomer from Mannheim in the starting game of the 1971/72 series, on August 14, 1971, at the away game at SpVgg Bayreuth. Together with Werner Adler and Horst Wild, he formed the KSC midfield. Place completed 35 games with two goals in the first year in Karlsruhe and the KSC took fifth place. In the second year, in the 1972/73 season, in which Platz became the KSC's most frequently used player with 34 games (3 goals), he won the runner-up in the South with the Wildpark -Elf and came to more in the Bundesliga promotion round seven bets with one goal. Fortuna Köln , who were victorious in the first promotion game, rose to the Bundesliga. Together with Gerhard Faltermeier and Hans Haunstein , Platz formed the KSC midfield. After the last regional league round in 1973/74 - space came under the new coach Carl-Heinz Rühl to 31 league games - the Mannheimer ended his contract playing career and joined SpVgg Neckarelz in the 1st amateur league North Baden for the 1974/75 season . Overall, Platz in the Regionalliga Süd at Karlsruher SC had played another 100 league games and scored six goals. It was only in the runner-up season 1972/73 that Platz with the KSC met again in a points game against a Mannheim club. He won the home game with Karlsruhe against Waldhof on October 28, 1972 4: 2, the second leg on April 28, 1973 ended 3: 3 in front of 12,000 spectators. Place formed the KSC midfield with Gerd Faltermeier and Hans Haunstein. In the last regional league season, 1973/74, he won the home game with Karlsruhe (3-0), but lost 0-1 at the Waldhof. This season, the grass players of the VfR were again involved in the regional league: In the first half of the season VfR won the home game 2-1, in the second half of the season KSC retaliated with a 3-1 home win. Place acted in all four games in the KSC midfield. Wilfried Trenkel , Haunstein, Faltermeier, Günther Fuchs and Horst Wild were alternately active at his side .

Amateur and profession

After finishing his active career, he worked as a teacher for English and sports at the Peter-Petersen-Gymnasium in Mannheim until 2008 and coached some lower-class teams until the 1990s, most recently SV Neidenstein. On July 24, 1985, Wolfgang Platz took part in a charity game of the “Franz Beckenbauer Foundation” in the Mannheim Waldhof Stadium in front of 7,000 spectators against the “Uwe Seeler traditional team” among a selection of former Mannheim contract players.
