career

Amateur and Karlsruher SC, until 1962

Heinz Schmitt grew up as a footballer in the youth department of his home club FC Alemannia Eggenstein in the Karlsruhe district. He stood out in all youth teams due to his ball technique, which was well above average. Already at the age of 11 he played as a "toddler" in the C-youth against up to three years older and two head bigger opponents. Gustav Witlatschil , his future teammate at Karlsruher SC, still vividly remembers (2008) the point games in the youth team of his Karlsruher FC Phönix against Eggenstein with the "little" Heinz Schmitt, who was already a gifted technician back then. In the senior sector, the offensive talent drew attention to himself with his home club in the 2nd Amateur League Middle Baden, Season 1. The 20-year-old attacking player Heinz Schmitt got after the preliminary round match in the 1957/58 season in November 1957 against the amateurs of the Karlsruher SC from the presidium of the upper division club an immediate contract offer for their league team submitted. The ambitious young player accepted the offer despite the related suspension and moved to the Karlsruhe Wildlife Park.

Under coach Ludwig Janda , the newcomer from Eggenstein had to wait until August 31, 1958, before he could celebrate his debut in the Oberliga Süd . He immediately contributed two hits to the 6: 3 home win against SSV Reutlingen. The KSC attack acted against the Swabian team from the stadium at the Kreuzeiche in the following line-up: Willy Reitgaßl , Heinz Schmitt, Gustav Witlatschil, Günter Herrmann and Oswald Traub . Due to the further competition in the KSC attack by Heinz Beck , Ernst Kunkel , Klaus Matischak and Manfred Reiner , Schmitt only made seven league appearances in 1958/59 in which he scored five goals. In his second game year, 1959/60, he stood by his convincing performances in the preparation at the start of the round, on August 23, 1959 at the away game in Reutlingen, in the 2: 3 defeat as half left next to left winger Friedel Späth , now by coach Eduard Frühwirth trained the KSC team. This was followed by a setback: Schmitt had to undergo a meniscus operation and was only able to play again on matchday 19, January 24, 1960, in the 4-0 away win against Viktoria Aschaffenburg in the league. Schmitt celebrated a tailor-made comeback with two goals. The Aschaffenburgs were trained by Ernst Lehner and had goalkeeper Otmar Groh , defender Heinrich Dittel , center runner Egon Horst and half-left Ernst Kreuz in front of 12,000 spectators in the stadium on Schönbusch . Heinz Schmitt scored four goals in a 10-1 home win on February 21, 1960 against Bayern Hof. The Sport Magazin commented on it with the following words: “The reformed storm proved that it can score goals. With Beck in the middle and Schmitt on the left, the row of five came to life ”. In the three games on March 20 in the South German Cup against SpVgg Bayreuth (with Fritz Semmelmann and Johann Zeitler ), on March 27 at 1. FC Nürnberg and on April 3, 1960 in the home game against FC Bayern Munich in the league Heinz Schmitt on the key KSC actors. In Bayreuth he scored the 2-1 lead in extra time in the 110th minute, at the league game on March 27th in Nuremberg he scored the 2-1 winning goal in the 87th minute and left in front of 35,000 spectators in the Wildpark Stadium Against FC Bayern Munich on April 3, three more goals against Bayern goalkeeper Árpád Fazekas in a 4-2 home win followed. When the leader of the table from Karlsruhe scored a 1-1 draw in fourth place in 1860 Munich on matchday 28, April 10, Heinz Schmitt belonged to the left wing of the Baden storm row, which was positively rated in the sports magazine. The match in the fourth round for the South German Cup on May 7, 1960 in Karlsruhe against Bayern Munich became the dress rehearsal for the final round for the KSC. After goals from Reiner and Wischnowsky, the southern champion won 2-1 goals and Schmitt, who was used on half right for Günther Herrmann, turned out to be the best striker at KSC. From May 14 to June 18, 1960, the KSC played its group games for the German soccer championship against Westfalia Herne , Hamburger SV and Borussia Neunkirchen . In all six matches, coach Frühwirth brought in Heinz Schmitt in the KSC attack, who scored two goals. Schmitt dealt with Hans Tilkowski , Alfred Pyka , Helmut Benthaus , Otto Luttrop and Gerhard Clement in the games against Herne and experienced after the 2-4 home defeat against Borussia Neunkirchen - Gerd Lauck , Erich Leist , Dieter Harig , Karl Ringel , Rudi Dörrenbächer - in the second leg, the change on the middle position from Bernhard Termath to Gustav Witlatschil. In the two games against the eventual German champions Hamburger SV on May 21 in Hamburg and June 11 in Karlsruhe, when the KSC scored 3-1 points, Schmitt stormed on the left wing and scored a 4-3 home win in the 23rd minute of the game, the interim 3-0 lead for Baden.

Two weeks before the start of the round in 1960/61, on July 30, 1960, the final of the South German club cup took place in Mannheim in front of 22,000 spectators between Karlsruher SC and Eintracht Frankfurt. Heinz Schmitt had to do with Eintracht defender Friedel Lutz on the left wing . KSC won the game with 2-1 goals. Surprisingly for Schmitt, coach Frühwirth built on the storm formation with Reitgaßl, Herrmann, Wischnowsky, Späth and Reinhold Nedoschil in the league season and he only came to three missions where he scored two goals. Also in the 1961/62 season - Josef Marx was now increasing the number of strikers from Karlsruhe - he was only allowed six missions and so Heinz Schmitt decided to change clubs for the 1962/63 round in order to be able to play regularly again. The extensive and impressive trip to South America from April 29 to May 24, 1962, where Schmitt and the KSC in Vina del Mar u. a. played a friendly against the national team of Chile with 2-0 goals. In Santiago de Chile there was a reunion with ex-teammate Horst Szymaniak and KSC playmaker Günther Herrmann, who were in Chile with the DFB for the 1962 World Cup . After 27 games in the Oberliga Süd with 19 goals scored for Karlsruher SC, Heinz Schmitt played from the 1962/63 season for SV Waldhof Mannheim, who had just been relegated to the 2nd League South .

Mannheim, until 1968

With the blue-blacks from the stadium on Alsenweg, the newcomer from Karlsruhe took third place in the second division in 1962/63 behind FSV Frankfurt and ESV Ingolstadt. Waldhof was thus qualified for the new Regionalliga Süd from the 1963/64 round. Schmitt belonged to the regular line-up and his move had thus proven to be the right one. In the first year of the Regionalliga he played all 38 rounds and came 11th with Waldhof. With the other top performers Helmut Maklicza, Wolfgang Höfig , Rolf Lederer , Klaus Sinn , Albert Preis, Karl-Heinz Kiß , Günter Träutlein and Friedrich Zipperer , Heinz Schmitt's team improved to fourth and third in the south over the next two laps. In 1965 Bayern Munich, SSV Reutlingen and Kickers Offenbach ranked ahead of Waldhof and in 1966 Schmitt and his teammates finished third behind Schweinfurt 05 and Offenbach. Under coach Fred Hoffmann, Heinz Schmitt scored 19 goals in the 1966 World Cup in the Regionalliga Süd and thus ranked seventh in the scorer list behind Willibald Mikulasch , Wolfgang Breuer , Norbert Knopf, Werner Anzill , Siegfried Gast and Franz Schäffner together with Kurt Dachlauer . He opened the round with two goals on matchday one in a 7-2 home win against Opel Rüsselsheim. Then Mönchengladbach, Schalke and Düsseldorf negotiated with Schmitt, who also wanted to try it in the Bundesliga, but the step did not succeed due to the excessive transfer conditions from Waldhof and the very angry striker then joined local rivals VfR - also with a bit of defiance Mannheim for the 1966/67 round. Schmitt had played 99 games for Waldhof in the Regionalliga Süd from 1964 to 1966 and scored 35 goals.

With the blue-white-red lawn players he finished fifth in 1967 and sixth in 1968 and came alongside fellow players Klaus Beckfeld , Walter Duttenhofer, Wolfgang Platz , Ernst Tober, Jürgen Schult , Hans Benzler and Franz Schäffner from 1966 to 1968 to 54 regional league games and scored 20 goals. Schmitt played his last round game on April 13, 1968 in a 2-2 draw at Darmstadt 98 when he and Jürgen Schult formed the left wing of VfR.

Finale

After the end of his contract playing at VfR Mannheim in 1968, Heinz Schmitt returned to his home club Alemannia Eggenstein at the age of 31 as a player-coach. Professionally, he ran the gas station at the Bruchsal motorway service station for over 30 years and still lives today (2014) in his home town of Eggenstein.
