Wolfgang Renner (cyclist)

Wolfgang Renner (born October 28, 1947 in Stuttgart ) is a former German cyclocross driver who was able to win several German championship titles in this sport. Furthermore, he and his company Centurion were the first German manufacturer to introduce the mountain bike in Germany.

Life

The sporting career of Wolfgang Renner (who started for the RV Pfeil Magstadt association ) began in childhood with the sport of artificial cycling , in which he was successful together with his twin brother Jürgen. He then moved to the cross-country race , which better as the road cycling with a degree in electrical engineering and business administration had agreed and in 1970, 1971 and 1972 in the amateurs each German champion in this discipline. In 1968 he started for the first time at the UCI World Championships in his discipline and finished in 28th place. In 1972 he won the bronze medal when Norbert Dedeckere won.

In 1976, an acquaintance gave Renner the opportunity to start trading in bicycle components by selling Japanese Centurion frames. As a result, a branch of the Centurion brand was created in Germany , whose naming rights he secured in 1991. Renner, who was given a significant share in the introduction of the trend sports BMX and MTB from the United States , was active alongside his commitment to his company on the one hand as an organizer of cycling events, where he succeeded, for example, in getting the Association of German Cyclists to host the first Moving German championships in mountain biking by massively supporting this project or when he opened the first BMX track in Baden-Württemberg in 1981. On the other hand as a freelance journalist, where he published various articles in relevant cycling magazines under a pseudonym.
