Wolfgang Schieren

Wolfgang Schieren (born June 8, 1927 in Herzogenrath ; † February 24, 1996 in Munich ) was a German insurance manager and CEO of Allianz AG from 1971 to 1991 .

Life

Schieren was born in Herzogenrath near Aachen in 1927. At the age of 14 he lost his father, and a year later he became an anti-aircraft helper. At 17, he volunteered for the front as an officer candidate . He was captured by the French for three years and came back late. He studied law at the University of Tübingen , where he became a member of the Corps Borussia Tübingen ( KSCV ) and later a member of the Corps Marcomannia Breslau zu Cologne ( KSCV ). 1955 Schieren was with the thesis on the social unfair dismissal under § 1 Employment Protection Act of 10 August 1951 at the University of Cologne Dr. jur. PhD.

Schieren became the seventh General Director in the history of Allianz and was CEO of Allianz AG from 1971 to 1991 . He was a major proponent and as such responsible for the globalization of Allianz AG. Henning Schulte-Noelle's predecessor initiated the worldwide expansion of the insurance group in 70 countries and consolidated Allianz AG as a global corporation . In 1990 Allianz bought control of the American insurance group Fireman's Fund for DM 5.3 billion . which later turned out to be a major economic mistake. Also in 1990 Allianz secured the majority of the GDR State Insurance .

In 1990, Der Spiegel called Schieren the “secret director of the German economy”. Allianz had become the number 1 insurance company in Europe.

From 1991 until his death in 1996 he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Allianz AG. He was a member of various supervisory boards, for example deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Munich Reinsurance Company and Beiersdorf AG ( supervisory board boss 1990).

The Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft and Allianz AG have been endowed with the chair of Dr. Wolfgang Schieren Chair for Insurance and Risk Management at the Economics Faculty of Humboldt University . The first professor on April 1, 1999 was Helmut Gründl .

The Dr. Schieren-Förderpreis is awarded annually by the Anneliese and Wolfgang Schieren Foundation for excellent scientific achievements in the field of insurance and risk management by the HU Berlin. Schieren lived in Munich-Bogenhausen (Herzogpark).
